Early this morning, after Awlaki's name was publicly linked to Hasan's, a posting on Awlaki's site was titled “Nidal Hassan Did the Right Thing.”

In it, a writer claiming to be Awlaki described Hasan as a hero and "a man of conscience who could not bear living the contradiction of being a Muslim and serving in an army that is fighting against his own people."

"Nidal opened fire on soldiers who were on their way to be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan . How can there be any dispute about the virtue of what he has done? In fact the only way a Muslim could Islamically justify serving as a soldier in the U.S. army is if his intention is to follow the footsteps of men like Nidal," the writer said.

Did Nidal Hasan act as per the Holy Quran? We believe in the Holy Quran and the authentic Traditions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. In this issue, we concentrate on the Holy Quran alone first as no authentic Tradition could go against the Holy Quran.

Yusuf Ali 5:32

On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our apostles with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land.

Quoting from the LA Times again, we have:

Hasan is accused of opening fire at a readiness center in Ft. Hood , Texas , on Thursday, killing 13 and wounding dozens. He reportedly had been depressed about his upcoming deployment to Afghanistan .

===

Have the 13 killed in the shooting committed any murder or have they spread any mischief? None. Thus the act of Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is against Verse 32 of Chapter 5 of the Holy Quran.

What is expected of a Muslim? Verses 33 and 34 of Chapter 5 of the Holy Quran direct thus:

Yusuf Ali 5:33

The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter;

Yusuf Ali 5:34

Except for those who repent before they fall into your power: in that case, know that Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Who strive with might and main for mischief through the land? Are the soldiers of the US Army striving for mischief? Are they actively involved in criticizing Allah Subhana Wa Taala or in denigrating Islam? What about the act of Awlaki in suggesting that any Muslim serving the US Army must emulate Hasan? Is not Awlaki insulting Islam by claiming that any Muslim serving in the US Army must kill  his/ her fellow soldiers? Why could not Hasan seek discharge from the Army on the ground that his conscience does not permit him to fight in Iraq and/ or Afghanistan ? Had he done that – object to going to Iraq or Afghanistan – he would have highlighted the moral dilemma and he might have induced his fellow soldiers to reconsider their agreement to fight in Iraq or Afghanistan .

What is the meaning of repenting before falling into the power of Muslims? The following Tradition is important in this regard.

The words "Badr hands sword cut" appear in 2 hadith(s) in Bukhari translation.

(2) Narrated Al-Miqdad bin 'Amr Al-Kindi: An ally of Bani Zuhra who took part in the battle of Badr with the Prophet, that he said, "O Allah's Apostle! If I meet an unbeliever and we have a fight, and he strikes my hand with the sword and cuts it off, and then takes refuge from me under a tree, and says, 'I have surrendered to Allah (i.e. embraced Islam),' may I kill him after he has said so?" Allah's Apostle said, "Do not kill him." Al-Miqdad said, "But O Allah's Apostle! He had chopped off one of my hands and he said that after he had cut it off. May I kill him?" The Prophet said. "Do not kill him for if you kill him, he would be in the position in which you had been before you kill him, and you would be in the position in which he was before he said the sentence." The Prophet also said to Al-Miqdad, "If a faithful believer conceals his faith (Islam) from the disbelievers, and then when he declares his Islam, you kill him, (you will be sinful). Remember that you were also concealing your faith (Islam) at Mecca before."  (Book #83, Hadith #5)

Have not some Americans who fought in Iraq or Afghanistan embraced Islam? Do persons like Awlaki have any proof that none of the non-Muslim soldiers of the American Army would embrace Islam in future? Do they know the future? It is persons like Awlaki who spread mischief by misrepresenting Islam and they must repent for implying that Islam is a religion of violence, whereas even those who have killed Muslims in war while being non-Muslims but have understood Islam and embraced Islam are forgiven their earlier act of killing Muslims.

Allah Subhana Wa Taala knows best.

Your brother,

Mohideen Ibramsha
