A mail claiming that China is reducing its dollar holdings because it is buying copper in excess of its needs was received on April 18, 2009. Copper is not a noble metal and thus can not be stored as a security for currency. There must be other reasons for China stock piling copper.
One possibility is the hybrid cars to be produced. The generator/ motor component of a hybrid car needs copper wires. Hybrid cars still need oil to run. In contrast an electric car does not need oil. It just needs the batteries to be charged. The advantage of producing electric cars is that it offers flexibility of fuel.
The solar cells are approaching the ROI of coal-fired power plants. A Chinese company has stated the following.

Solar cells convert energy from the sunlight and there would be no need for oil or coal. Why should China procure copper in anticipation of her companies like 'China Nuvo Sloar Energy' developing commercially viable products?

With the access to Gulf energy blocked, China has to depend on Russia for fuel unless she develops solar energy to meet all her energy demands.
President Obama has increased the forces in Afghanistan and is engaged with Pakistan to bring the Afghan war to a successful conclusion. A major objective of the Afghan war is to make Taliban and Al-Quada ineffective. What if Osama Bin Laden was dead long ago and some interested party is keeping him alive? Should we really continue the Afghan war that too when it could be misconstrued by China that even the Democratic administration is carrying out the PNAC agenda of denying China access to the Gulf oil?
